what is the october revolution?
The October Revolution is the name of the revolution where the Bolshevik Party took control of the capital of Russia, Petrograd by eliminating the previous liberal democratic government lead by Alexander Kerensky. [21] Soon after, the Bolsheviks declared the first communist Soviet government for Russia with Vladimir Lenin as the leader. [22] The Bolsheviks used the Red Guards and soldiers consisting of many soviets to capture the city. Although the Bolsheviks succeeded in overthrowing the previous government, many people were killed during the fight. [23] The new communist Soviet government portrayed the basic ideas formed by the theorist Karl Marx called marxism.
RELATION WITH ANIMAL FARM
George Orwell’s political allegory novel of the Russian Revolution clearly reflects one of the two main revolutions that represents the start of many years of communist rule in Russia, the October Revolution. In Animal Farm, the allegory of the October Revolution is the Battle of the Cowshed. [24] In both the novel and the revolution, events happen in a similar format and sequence. The first similarity between both revolutions is the victim of the battles. Both victims was the previous authority of power of the area. In Animal Farm, Mr. Jones was attacked and forced to leave the farm by the animals as they were starved for many days and could not tolerate such treatment any longer. [25] Similarly, during the Russian Revolution, the previous leader that was forced to leave was the prime minister Alexander Kerensky by the Bolsheviks as they had persuaded the soviets with propaganda that with change, they can strive for a better living. The next similarity of the events was the outcome of the revolution. In the Russian Revolution, the Bolsheviks succeeded in removing the previous government and soon declared the first Soviet government. In the same sense, after Mr. Jones exiled from the farm, the animals proclaimed that the farm would be renamed Animal Farm and run by the animals themselves. Thirdly, is the rise of a part of the community. After the revolution, the Bolsheviks rose in terms of power and the pigs in the novel was also becoming the leaders of the farm due to their knowledge. [26] Finally, is the ideologies that was represented in the events. Both the previous authority party had the characteristics of socialism, whilst the party that gains victory in the battles portrayed ideas of communism. [27] From the above attributes, we can see that the Battle of the Cowshed is a definite symbol of the October Revolution.
WHY DID ORWELL ALLEGORIZE THE OCTOBER REVOLUTION? WAS HE SUCCESSFUL?
Orwell depicts the October Revolution in an allegory of the Battle of the Cowshed in Animal Farm as it was the event that held the significance of the rise of the communist party. It symbolized the dreams of freedom and a better life for the working class of Russia and the enslaved animals of Manor Farm. This allegory was successful as both events comprised of the similar characteristics such as the same promise of a better life and the violent destruction of the previous ruling socialist power. It also represented an unseen period of misery for the both lower class in the future.
